My First Chapter SUCKED & Here's How I Fixed It

I've spent most of 2021 so far working on the second draft of my novel 1837. Like many writers, I've spent hours and hours trying to craft an opening that will engage readers, introduce my characters and setting, and start the story off strong.

I have sooo many versions of my opening and I thought it would be fun to critique my own first draft, and show how I changed the opening from first to second draft. Is this a final version? No! I already have a version I like even better than that second draft. However, diving into the nitty-gritty of other people's writing really interests me, and I hope you will enjoy it too!
