5 Questions to Ask About Your Book's Opening

How do you write your novel opening so it sets the novel's tone, makes promises about the plot, introduces the characters, orients the reader in the setting, AND keeps readers turning pages? Honestly, this is a question I'm trying to answer myself. I've recently analyzed a dozen of my favourite openings in an attempt to understand HOW the writer engaged the reader.
